Poetry is a daily part of our Shared Reading time together. Young readers benefit from reading poems. Reading & memorizing poems helps build confidence too. Re-reading familar "stale text" builds fluency "smooth reading." The shared experience also helps build a sense of community in our classroom. Poems are just a fun way to read! The children seem to love the rhythm and rhyme of the poems. We add a new poem to our Poetry Binder every week. The children LOVE when we read with "style", Olympic Weightlifter was a big hit. Be sure to ask your child about that. After the whole group readings, I set a timer and the students orally read to other classmates. The "listener" then gives the reader feedback on their reading. The listener then signs the readers Communication Log. During this time I walk around monitoring, listening to individual students read, & assist where necessary. We will practice poety daily at school so that on Thursdays the students can bring our Poetry Notebooks home to share with you. Please sign and add a comment to the Communication Sheet in the front section so I can see how your child is doing at home. Please do not change the order of the poems or take any poems out since we practice them daily. Remember to send your child's Poetry Notebook back to school on Friday. Thanks in advance for your help in practicing and improving your child's reading this year. Mrs. J
