CHRISTMAS PARTY DATE CHANGED!!

Parents, the date of our classroom Christmas party has changed from Thursday to FRIDAY, DECEMBER 19TH 9:00-10:00 AM. My mother will be going into the hospital for a medical procedure on Thursday & I will need to be with her. We will wear our pajamas to the party on Friday. I apologize for any inconvenience. Holiday Classroom Card Exchange

We are so excited! We will be participating in another online project. It is a classroom Christmas card exchange. We will be sending out Christmas cards to 23 different classrooms in the US. We will also be getting 23 cards from the same classrooms. The students are really looking forward to this project. Today we set up one of our bulletin boards with a US map. When we receive a card, we plan on hanging it up then connecting a piece of yarn from the card to the state where it was mailed. We will keep you posted as we receive the cards. I will be asking each child to bring one stamp. Each student will get to put their stamp on one of the out going cards.

Christmas Around The World - Germany & Mexico

Today "Oma" (grandma) Dunn came to our classroom to share Christmas traditions from Germany. She told us about growing up in Germany & their Christmas traditions. She also shared what Christmas was like during the end of WWII. She brought several things to show us from her childhood: handmade table clothes made by her mother, tree candle holders, craft books, & much more. Children clean & polish their shoes then leave them out for Santa Clause (Chris Kringle). Santa leaves small gifts, sweets, chocolates, & nuts for the children in their polished shoes. She brought us sweets & chocolates. They were so yummy!!!! She also told us that Christmas trees are the first gift of Christmas from parents to their children. They put them up on Christmas. Oma also brought us an advent calendar. The students enjoyed looking through the holiday craft & cooking books. She shared a fable with us about the "Golden Coin Child." The moral of the story, giving...not recieving is important. We want to thank our dear Oma for sharing everything with us!

A Peek At Our Week Dec 8-12th

This week will be discussing long vowel patterns of a, e, & o. We will be making words & attempting to increase our fluency with several neat activities. We will be working on our “hush, hush” Christmas gifts for our parents. During math this week we will focus on doubles & missing addends in fact families. We will travel to Mexico & Germany with a special guest (Oma Dunn) who was raised in Germany. I will be gone this Friday to Oklahoma City, to cheer on my daughter Lauren & the TMS pom squad. They will be competing in the State Dance Finals. They are defending champions (proud mom can you tell). I have spoken to the students about following the classroom/school procedures while I am away. I know they will try their best for me!

ACR - Accelerated Reader

We have started taking ACR (Accelerated Reading) computer tests over library books in our classroom. Mrs. Jones checks our individual ACR scores each Friday. Individually we earn a free Braum's ice cream ticket for every 6 passed tests. ACR is a way to measure our comprehension. We love ACR!

A Peek At Our Week Dec 1-4th

Welcome Back!!! December is here & with it comes the countdown to Christmas. We will "kick off" the lighting of Seminary Hall this Thursday evening. The students will sing a couple of Christmas songs. It might be chilly so bundle up! There is suppose to be hot chocolate, yum! This week in our classroom, I will be reassessing each student in the following areas: Literacy First (phonics, phonemic awareness, & sight word lists), BEAR Spelling Inventory, Reading Fluency, & timed 5 minute Math Fact Assessments. The reassessments are intended to track each child’s progress & areas of need. We will be having spelling this week. During math this week we will focus on making money amounts & leveled addition. We will begin our “Trip Around The World” by discussing each continent and it’s holiday traditions. The students are really looking forward to this social studies unit. Our Christmas party will be on Thursday, December 18th. It is going to be a morning breakfast party. We will all wear our pajamas. Our last day will be Friday, December 19th. School starts back on Monday, January 5th. Have a great week!!!!!!!!!!!

Mystery Reader...It's Mrs. Goodsell

The day before Thanksgiving break we had a guest reader! Melissa Goodsell (Dylan's mom) came to our classroom and read "Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving. It was such a sweet and funny story about a group of students on a field trip to a farm the day before Thanksgiving. The students save the turkeys and bring them home. The students LOVED the story!!! Thank you Melissa for taking time out of your busy schedule to read to us!!! Afterwards, we made "Cookie Turkeys" for a snack. The students enjoyed making the cookies then eating them!!!

Our Thanksgiving Meal

We decided to eat our Thanksgiving meal in our classroom. We decorated our tables with "artistic" table clothes. The students used their hands & crayons to create "hand turkeys." They placed their place cards with their names where they wanted to sit. The students used the table manners that they learned in Etiquette Class. We had a wonderful meal together!

Etiquette Class

Our class participated in "Etiquette Class" to improve our table manners. The class was designed to go hand in hand with our school wide Great Expectation practices. The students seemed to enjoy eating on the stage. They loved the place cards with their names on them. They have began to implement the table manners they learned into their daily lunch routine.

A Peek At Our Week Nov. 17-21

This will be the last full week before Thanksgiving break. This week will continue our author study over Leo Leonni. It is time once again for school wide literacy assessments. I will be assessing each student in the following areas: phonics, phonological awareness, fluency, sight word lists, & independent reading levels (DRA’s). We’ll also begin research reports over the Mayflower. We did not have time for them last week. During math we will review addition, tallying, fractions, & time. I will not be sending home a newsletter next week, so I would like to wish all the extended members of our Multiage Family a Happy and safe Thanksgiving.

Looking At Owl Pellets

We studied nocturnal animals during the months of October & November. Owls were one of the animals that we studied. We learned many interesting facts about owls. Many types of owls mate for life. Mrs. J bought owl pellets for us to explore. We disected them to see what was inside of them. It was a yucky activity but very interesting. We found a lot of bones & fur. There was a small mouse skull. We put several of the bones under our computer microscope to get a better look at them. We took pictures of the bones with the microscope. Now we can look at them on the computer any time we want.

Our Fall Walk

We went on a walk to look for signs of autumn. Each student had two specific leaves/trees that they were looking for. They wrote in their science journals about their leaves and the trees that they came from. We took the leaves back to the room and worked in cooperative groups to come up with as many adjectives that we could think of to describe the leaves (smooth, soft, brown, orange, oval, pointy, etc.). We also talked about evergreens and deciduous trees. It was a great activity on a very windy day!

We Love The Veterans!

We celebrated our Veterans by making American heart flags. We hung them in the hallways to salute our Veterans. Our school held a Veteran's assembly. Many Veterans came and we sang songs, read poems, and watched a slide show. It was wonderful! We appreciate all that the Veterans did for our country.

I hope everyone had a fun Halloween. I sure did! This week we will begin a unit on fall, continue studying about adjectives in language arts, & work on telling time. We’ll be working in cooperative groups to research & write reports over owls. We did not have time for the reports last week. Reading bags go home today. We will be having our spelling test on Thursday this week since I will be gone on Friday. My substitute will be Mrs. Pierce. She substituted for Mrs. Blunt & I last year. She is very familiar with the multiage concept & our classroom procedures. If you have any question or concerns feel free to contact me.

Fall Carnival

Greenwood will be holding their Fall Carnival on Friday, November 14th from 6-9 pm in the gym. There will be games, 2 jupiter jumps, prizes, and a classroom "clay pot" auction. The PTA will be selling wrist bands instead of tickets this year. Hope everyone will come out and support our school. Mrs. Jones & Mrs. Blunt are joining together to sponsor "Hole In One" golf. If you have any questions or would like to help out by volunteering for 30 minutes in our classroom booth, please contact me.
